As expected, and now official, Clay Holmes is a free agent. He had a $12 million player option for 2027, but the 33-year-old righty is going to be able to do better than that in free agency – perhaps even with the Cubs.
After missing the middle of the season thanks to a flukey leg fracture on a comebacker, Holmes was traded to the Cubs (together with Tyrone Taylor) for Jefferson Rojas. It was an exceptionally steep price to pay, but Holmes was one of the best rental starters on the market, and a very good fit for the Cubs’ defense. Holmes went on to post a 4.25 ERA over nine starts with the Cubs (4% worse than league average by ERA-; he was about average by FIP-), and did not pitch in the postseason. Suffice to say, it’s one of those situations where, if Rojas goes on to become a big league contributor, the trade will not be looked back on fondly.
All that said, if the Cubs do find a way to re-sign Clay Holmes to a multi-year deal, and if we can convince ourselves that the opportunity to court him over the last few months was instrumental in that re-signing process, then maybe all will be well. Holmes would still have to produce from there, of course, but I do still like the idea of him in the middle of the Cubs’ rotation. I certainly hope there are conversations being had, as the Cubs have multiple needs in the rotation, and Holmes is a clear fit.
