Lewis Hamilton delivered a landmark result for Ferrari by claiming pole position for the Mexico City Grand Prix, edging Mercedes' George Russell by a breathtaking 0.009s in a thrilling qualifying shootout at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
The seven-time world champion produced a blistering final lap to secure the Scuderia's first pole of the 2026 season and, more significantly, his maiden pole position since joining the Italian outfit.
Russell had looked poised to snatch the top spot after dislodging Charles Leclerc with his final attempt, but Hamilton found just enough in the opening sector to turn the tables and take pole by the narrowest of margins.
Mexico City Grand Prix - Qualifying results
Leclerc settled for third, 0.119s behind his team-mate, as Ferrari locked out two of the top three positions.
Hamilton delivers when it matters
The final shootout was shaping up as a four-way fight, with Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren all showing flashes of genuine pole-winning potential.
Hamilton, however, saved his best for last. Russell's provisional pole had raised the prospect of a Mercedes front-row lockout, but the Briton responded with a decisive final effort to put Ferrari back on top.
Max Verstappen initially qualified fourth, less than two tenths off Hamilton's benchmark, but a one-place grid penalty for his Friday practice altercation with Liam Lawson drops the Red Bull driver to fifth.
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli finished fifth in the session, meaning he will line up fourth on Sunday.
World champion Lando Norris also appeared capable of challenging for pole, but failed to capitalise on his first flying lap before abandoning his second attempt.
Isack Hadjar qualified seventh after running wide at the slow-speed Turn 13, a recurring weakness for Red Bull around the Mexican circuit. Racing Bulls' Arvid Lindblad took eighth, while Lawson slipped to ninth following his share of the incident with Verstappen. Pierre Gasly completed the top 10.
Piastri suffers painful Q2 exit
Oscar Piastri endured another difficult qualifying session, failing to make the final shootout after struggling to extract performance from his McLaren.
The Australian had to abandon his opening Q2 attempt and couldn't recover on his second run, losing almost half a second through the Esses as rear grip deserted him. He was eliminated in 13th, a substantial nine-tenths behind team-mate Norris.
Gasly scraped into Q3 in 10th, narrowly eliminating Audi's Nico Hulkenberg. Franco Colapinto took 12th, ahead of Piastri, Gabriel Bortoleto and Haas driver Oliver Bearman, whose final attempt was deleted for exceeding track limits. Carlos Sainz was the final driver through to Q2 but could manage only 15th.
Alonso endures heartbreaking exit
Q1 was interrupted by a red flag with 11 minutes remaining after Fernando Alonso's Aston Martin ground to a halt at the Foro Sol stadium with a power unit problem.
It was a particularly cruel blow for the Spaniard, whose only flying lap had looked competitive enough to threaten a place in Q2. Instead, he was eliminated alongside Alex Albon, who finished a tenth behind Williams team-mate Sainz.
Haas debutant Ryo Hirakawa qualified 19th after stepping in for the benched Esteban Ocon, while Lance Stroll was 20th.
Cadillac's Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas completed the order, although Bottas was already facing a last-place start because of a grid penalty for taking a fifth Ferrari power unit.
Hamilton, meanwhile, will head into Sunday's race with a precious opportunity to convert his first Ferrari pole into an overdue victory for the Scuderia.
