Hamilton ‘lost for words’ after emotional Ferrari milestone ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

Lewis Hamilton has waited a long time for this one. Three years, to be precise. And when the moment finally arrived in Mexico City, the seven-time world champion was almost at a loss to explain what it meant.

"Lost for words" was how Hamilton described his emotions after delivering to Ferrari its first pole position of the 2026 season, and his own maiden Saturday triumph in red, with a sensational final lap that edged former Mercedes team-mate George Russell by just 0.009s.

At 41 years and 297 days, Hamilton also became Formula 1's oldest polesitter since Mario Andretti achieved the feat in 1982, adding another remarkable milestone to a career that already boasts more records than most drivers could dream of.

But this one clearly carried a little extra weight.

"Oh man, I'm lost for words. It feels special to be in Mexico and get my first pole with Ferrari, and number 105. I like that number," he said.

It was a fitting setting for the achievement. Mexico holds particularly happy memories for Hamilton, who celebrated two of his seven world championship triumphs at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez. Saturday offered another reason to cherish the venue.

A long road back to the top

The Briton's last pole had come at the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix, back when he was still wearing Mercedes colours. His move to Ferrari had yet to become reality, and the prospect of finally putting the Scuderia back on top of a qualifying session had remained frustratingly elusive.

That made Saturday's achievement all the sweeter, particularly given how little had gone smoothly earlier in the weekend.

Hamilton lost precious track time in Friday's second practice session after a power unit problem restricted him to just 13 laps. He had also spent the opening session evaluating an aerodynamic rake, leaving him playing catch-up as the weekend unfolded.

Yet Ferrari's underlying pace and a productive set-up direction gave him the confidence to attack when it mattered.

"It's been a really, really tough, challenging weekend," he explained.

"Obviously, in FP1. We had a [aerodynamic] rake running, and we obviously then had the engine issue we had yesterday, which meant that we were just on the back foot. I didn't get to do a long run, but we've done a really good job with the setup over the weekend."

Speaking afterwards to former world champion Jenson Button, Hamilton also highlighted how closely matched the leading contenders were, and how little separated a successful qualifying campaign from a missed opportunity.

"It's so close between us all. For example, in Q2, I didn't get my lap in at the beginning. I think the others have a new tyre for the start but to have pole here. It feels special to be here in Mexico and 105, I like that number."

Age is just another number for Hamilton

The milestone also prompted inevitable questions about longevity, with Hamilton now sitting fifth on F1's all-time list of oldest polesitters, between Mario Andretti and Nigel Mansell.

His response suggested retirement is hardly occupying his thoughts.

"Oh man, when there's a will, there's a way. It's all in the mind. I do all those different things that you can do to try and keep yourself young and fit,” he said.

"But I love what I do, and that love is not gone. I wake up every day thinking about it. I dream about it, and I've got this amazing support around the world that these guys keep me going, so I hope they're happy with that today, and I hope that I can deliver for them tomorrow."

That final thought will resonate particularly strongly around Ferrari, whose supporters have waited patiently for a moment like this.

Hamilton has delivered the pole. Now comes the potentially even bigger challenge: turning it into a victory on Sunday and giving the Scuderia something to celebrate all over again.
