The Braves are reuniting with Dana Brown as a senior advisor in their amateur scouting department, as per USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. It’s a homecoming for Brown, who worked as Atlanta’s VP of scouting from 2019-22 before he was hired as the Astros’ general manager.
Brown and Braves president of baseball operations Alex Anthopoulos have a long working relationship dating back to their days in Montreal, when Anthopoulos was Brown’s assistant when Brown was hired as the Expos’ director of amateur scouting in 2002. Brown continued in that role with the Expos/Nationals through the franchise’s move to Washington and until 2009, when Anthopoulos (now the Blue Jays’ GM) hired Brown for a special assistant’s role in Toronto. Once Anthopoulos was hired by the Braves following the 2017 season, Brown reunited with Anthopoulos once more within a couple of years.
The Astros’ hiring of Brown was a rare case of a team making a front office change right after a World Series title, as former GM James Click was let go after the playoff run due to clashes with owner Jim Crane (who is known for playing a direct role in baseball operations). While Brown didn’t capture a championship during his time in Houston, he also had a much better record than most GMs who are shown the door. Houston made the ALCS in 2023 and won two AL West titles in Brown’s three full seasons as GM, and the Astros even ended up winning the division again this year, albeit with an 81-81 record.
Since that last ALCS trip, however, the Astros haven’t won a playoff game, let alone a series. Between their short-lived 2024 postseason run and missing the playoffs altogether in 2025, there was plenty of buzz that Brown and manager Joe Espada were both in danger of being replaced. The speculation proved to be correct, as the Astros parted ways with Brown in August and Espada was officially let go a few weeks ago.
In the aftermath of the Astros job, it’s no surprise that Brown is again teaming with Anthopoulos and a lot of other familiar faces in the Braves’ front office. Brown brings decades of scouting experience to his (somewhat) new position, and may more or less be able to pick right up where he left off before he left Atlanta for Houston.
