Welcome to the 3rd finals session of the 2026 U.S. Short Course World Championship Trials!

Yesterday’s finals session was fast with two world records falling along with a few U.S. Open records. We have already seen two U.S. Open records today courtesy of Jack Alexy in the 100 free and Van Mathias in the 50 breaststroke. If last night was any indication, more could be on the way tonight.

The meet will open with the 400 IM final, where Ryan Erisman holds a very tight top seed over Noah Cakir. Both seemed to be cruising in the morning session, which points to the potential for much faster swims tonight. Indiana’s Josh Bey will also factor into the equation, and it could be a close race.

Regan Smith had a big swim in the morning session of the women’s 100 backstroke to earn the top seed over Claire Curzan and newly minted world record holder Katharine Berkoff. She will be looking to pick up her 2nd event for the World Championships tonight after winning the 200 fly yesterday.

Johnny Crush set the top time in the men’s 50 backstroke to earn the top seed in 22.95 as the only swimmer under 23 seconds. There are a few swimmers in the heat who could challenge him for the top spot including Lucca Battaglini, who has a strong SCY personal best. Pay extra close attention to lane eight where Adam Chaney will be racing as one of the fastest SCY 50 backstrokers in history. He just squeaked into the final after appearing to slip on the start and will be a serious threat.

Kate Douglass and Alex Walsh cruised to the top seeds in the 200 IM prelims, just ahead of Lucy Bell from Stanford. Torri Huske will also be in the event, and with only two events tonight rather than the three this morning, she will likely be much faster than her prelims swim.

Ryan Erisman will swim his 2nd event of the session as the top seed in the men’s 1500 freestyle. He is one of just three athletes in the event, and will be looking to complete a distance sweep after he won the 800 free on night one.

The women’s 200 freestyle is next, and the top two finishers in the event will earn automatic spots on the World Championship team. Liberty Clark had the fastest prelims swim by about a second, but with a heat behind her that includes Camille Spink, Rylee Erisman, Simone Manuel, Claire Weinstein, and Alex Shackell, anything can happen.

The men’s 100 freestyle will also be an opportunity for the top two swimmers to earn automatic spots on the SC Worlds roster as Priority 1 swimmers. Jack Alexy and Chris Guiliano were both under the U.S. Open record in prelims, but Caeleb Dressel was on fire yesterday and will be looking to spoil their party from lane one.

Gretchen Walsh is the clear favorite to win the women’s 50 fly, coming in a second ahead of Claire Curzan for the top spot in prelims. Alex Shackell, Caroline Larsen, and Torri Huske are all in the final as well and will be serious threats for the 2nd place spot.

The men’s 200 butterfly is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated events at U.S. Trials meets for the next few years. Ilya Kharun earned a spot on the worlds team last night after winning the 100 fly and is one of the top 200 butterflyers in history and the U.S. Open record holder. Luca Urlando is the reigning long course world champion in the event and Ilya Kharun is the reigning short course world champion, though Urlando did not attend the 2024 SC Worlds meet. Add in Tyler Ray, who has been on fire so far this meet, and American swimming fans could be in for a very exciting few years of 200 butterfly races, which starts tonight.

Piper Enge earned the top seed in the women’s 100 breaststroke event after stopping the clock in 1:04.80 this morning. They will be trying to hold off Alex Walsh, whose lifetime best sits at 1:04.34 from two weeks ago for the top spot.

The final event of the night is the men’s 50 breaststroke. Van Mathias set his first individual world record last night in the men’s 100 breaststroke and broke the U.S. Open and American records in the 50 breast this morning. He needs to drop three tenths tonight if he wants to take down Emre Sakci‘s 2021 world record mark of 24.95.
