There was a fun little mystery earlier this week when a report out of Taiwan had it that an NL Central club was interested in signing 24-year-old Jyun-Yue Tseng, one of the best relievers in the CPBL. It wouldn’t be implausible for that team to be any of the five NL Central franchises, but it certainly would be fun if it was the Cubs. Until we knew more, though, I couldn’t go much further.
BUT! A new report out of Taiwan indicates that, yes, it was indeed the Cubs!
Unnamed NL Central Team=Chicago Cubs? ? CPBL columnist Vincent Liao revealed on his podcast that the Chicago Cubs have approached Fubon Guardians’ closer Tseng Jyun-Yue (曾峻岳). The deal is likely to be a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training. t.co/UjCHnKT5cd
— CPBL STATS (Taiwan Dark Lemon) ?? (@GOCPBL) October 29, 2026In addition to trying to coax out some results (obviously), it would also be very cool to bring in an established star from Taiwan to see about building out a pipeline to the burgeoning talent there. Get Tseng in the system, work with him in Spring Training (even if there’s a lockout, minor league Spring Training will continue as normal), and perhaps see what he can do at Triple-A first. I love that the Cubs are out there exploring all corners, so to speak.
From the previous write-up on Jyun-Yue Tseng:
Now, to be sure, there is not much of a history (yet!) for players successfully making the jump from the CPBL to MLB (more typical is a jump from Taiwan to another league in Asia, or a direct move to the U.S. as an international amateur). Chien-Ming Wang and Wei-Yin Chen are probably the best known success stories on the pitching side, but that was 7+ years ago.
Moreover, Tseng is listed at 5’8″, which is probably a factor in him being a reliever despite being so dominant (it may be a similar story to that of Kaima Taira, who is also listed at 5’8″ and periodically has been a reliever in Japan). I don’t know how “exciting” it would be if the Cubs were in on Jyun-Yue Tseng, which I do not mean as a value judgment – I genuinely don’t know what the level of excitement would be yet.
It maybe more of a developmental play at a lower price if the Cubs were to go after Tseng, rather than a sure-fire impact move in the bullpen. From clips I’ve seen, Tseng throws a slider, a splitter, and a fastball that touches 97.5 mph, which wouldn’t be elite, but very easily could be playable if it comes with other compelling pitch characteristics.
Fubon Guardians’ 曾峻岳 (Tseng Jyun-Yue) recorded his 8th save of the season. The 23-year-old flamethrower’s fastball topped out at 157 kph (97.6 mph) last night. ? t.co/45veLAoSSl
