A Chicago lung doctor used his surgical tools to handle an emergency unlike those typically seen in his field: a mischievous kitten trapped behind a wall.
Dr. Benjamin Seides, an interventional pulmonologist with the Canning Thoracic Institute at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital, was at home with his family getting ready for bed when they weren’t able to find their Russian blue kitten, Neko.
The family scoured the house while calling out the cat’s name, but it wasn’t until they heard a faint meow coming from the basement that they realized Neko had found his way inside a wall of their home by climbing into the ceiling through an unfinished area of the basement.
Seides knew Neko was inside the wall, but wasn’t sure exactly where. That’s when his medical training kicked in and he got creative.
After drilling a small hole in the drywall, Seides inserted a borescope — a slender camera that works similarly to what physicians use to examine a patient’s lungs and airways — to look inside the wall to find Neko.
He navigated the camera through the darkness inside the wall, like he would while performing an endoscopy, and eventually found Neko.
After creating a hole big enough for Neko to crawl through, the kitten was reunited with his family.
