A Chicago hospital cafeteria that was shut down earlier this month after an inspection revealed hundreds of live cockroaches in food preparation areas has reopened, according to health officials.
The Chicago Department of Public Health confirmed to NBC Chicago that the cafeteria, at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood, was reinspected and reopened Thursday.
The update comes after an Oct. 16 report from the Chicago Department of Public Health in which both the Rendezvous Café and the patient kitchen failed inspections.
At the time, inspectors reported more than 200 live cockroaches in multiple areas, including the main and rear food preparation areas, the grill and deep fryer, dry storage spaces and the main dish room.
The inspection also documented black slime inside an ice machine, grease buildup, leaking plumbing and previously cited sanitation violations that had not been corrected, including dead cockroaches and accumulations of grease, food debris and dirt.
After the initial inspection, the hospital released a statement saying it was addressing the findings.
“We recognize the importance of maintaining the highest standards for food safety and are taking the necessary steps to address the findings and meet all requirements to safely resume kitchen operations,” the hospital said. “In the meantime, patients continue to receive meals without interruption, with alternative food preparation and meal service arrangements in place.”
City health officials said patients were receiving food prepackaged directly from an alternative supplier, an arrangement reviewed and approved by the department.
CDPH said it had received no reports of infectious disease clusters related to the situation.
