A Note on Trade Speculation and Suggestions at the Outset of the Offseason ...Middle East

A random trade suggestion came across my desk this week, and I wanted to share it.

I share this trade suggestion not for its merits, however, but instead to make a very general point for the offseason:

It’s gonna be a long offseason t.co/iBMgbb0SWC

The general point is this: if a trade suggestion makes you jump up with ease and shout “DO IT DO IT DO IT,” then it’s probably not a realistic suggestion.

That’s obviously true when the trade is one of those patently ridiculous “eighteen mediocre prospects for one good player” volume suggestions. But it is also true when, as in this case, it isn’t even a comically bad suggestion – Logan Gilbert has just one more year of team control left, and George Kirby has just two. There are some warts there, particularly on the latter, and Matt Shaw likely has a lot of trade value. Plus Kane Kepley is a legit top-100 prospect.

In other words, I don’t know that the value in this trade is THAT far off on each side, but you’re just not going to get a team to send you two established mid-rotation (or better) in a single trade. Even when that team has other starting options and is desperate for bats. One-stop-shopping sounds nice, but in this case, it’s not realistic. So that gut reaction you feel when seeing the suggestion and you think, “Yes! Fill out the rotation in one move! Get two years of Kirby and maybe extend Gilbert! And plenty of money then to sign a big-time starter in free agency! This is a no-brainer!“, it’s your gut also telling you this trade type is probably not on the table.

All that said, do I think the Cubs could ONCE AGAIN have conversations with the Mariners about A Singular pitcher trade? I do. I still like Gilbert and Kirby, and I still like Bryce Miller and Emerson Hancock. And the Mariners still have Kade Anderson and Ryan Sloan coming, and big needs on the positional side. I think them trading ONE starting pitcher to the Cubs is plausible, and I think the Cubs CONSIDERING guys like Shaw and Kepley as trade pieces is also plausible.

Big caveat there if we’re actually drilling down on this trade suggestion: as things stand right now, the Cubs are not actually so overflowing with big-league-ready positional talent that Shaw is superfluous or Kepley won’t ever have a shot. There was a time when that was closer to true, but Owen Caissie is gone, Moises Ballesteros is gone, Seiya Suzuki is (probably) gone, Ian Happ is (probably) gone, and even bench guys like Michael Conforto and Tyrone Taylor are gone.

All else equal, I still think this is a good free agent crop for the Cubs’ starting pitching needs, and that’s the route I’d prefer they go first.
