The concert revives a tradition previously carried on by Grahame’s late father, Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh, who hosted similar celebrations at the venue in 2005 and 2008.
Grahame Lesh Is Carrying on His Father’s Legacy
The upcoming show brings together musicians with deep connections to the Lesh family and the Grateful Dead’s extended musical orbit.
Haynes and Molo both played with the Phil Lesh Quintet, the early-2000s Phil & Friends lineup nicknamed “The Q.” Grahame later reunited the group’s four surviving members for the March 2025 finale of his Unbroken Chain tribute to his father at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York.
Francis also performed during Grahame’s 2025 celebration of the Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary in San Francisco. Meanwhile, Preservation Hall Jazz Band has a longstanding connection to the Lesh family, having performed with Phil and collaborated with Grahame on other occasions.
Neville’s participation adds another important link to the event’s history.
The Grateful Dead’s Long History With Mardi Gras
The Grateful Dead’s Mardi Gras celebrations date back to 1986, when the band incorporated a parade into its Oakland performances, with the Neville Brothers opening the shows. Cyril Neville joined the Dead on percussion during a Feb. 11 performance that year.
The festivities became a recurring feature of the band’s Bay Area celebrations, with elaborate floats, costumed performers, and parades incorporated into concerts. A 1990 celebration at Oakland Coliseum Arena even featured a 26-foot jester.
Phil Lesh later brought the tradition to the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, hosting events there in 2005 and 2008.
Now, nearly two decades after that last celebration at the venue, his son is bringing the gathering back with a new generation of performers and familiar musical collaborators.
The concert is scheduled for Feb. 6, 2027. Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, Oct. 30, at 10 a.m. Pacific time.
