Sara Evans Scored a No. 1 Hit With ‘Suds in the Bucket’ in 2004; Bob Dylan Inspired the Lyrics to the Song About an 18-Year-Old Runaway ...Saudi Arabia

Sara Evans scored one of the biggest hits of her career in 2004 with “Suds in the Bucket.” The song appeared on her fourth studio album, Restless, and became her first single to earn platinum certification.

Written by Billy Montana and Tammy “Jenai” Wagoner, the upbeat country tune follows an 18-year-old girl who suddenly leaves home to run away with her boyfriend. The song eventually climbed to No. 1 on the country charts, but its writers drew inspiration from the music of an unlikely source, Bob Dylan.

Montana explained that Dylan influenced one of the song’s most memorable lyrical choices during an interview with Songfacts.

“The thing that I think I love the most about that song is the language,” Montana said. “We say, ‘Little pony-tail girl growed up to be a woman.’ Bob Dylan put in a song, I think it’s a line that goes, ‘Something I never knowed.’ Because he was rhyming it with ‘road.’ And so I was like, ‘Well, man, it can be done.’”

Although the song became closely associated with Evans, she wasn’t actually the artist Montana and Wagoner had in mind when they first started writing it.

According to Montana, a music industry tip sheet indicated that Lee Ann Womack was looking for an energetic song, prompting the pair to come up with something fun and lighthearted.

“There’s certain times when you get finished with a song, and you go, ‘Mission accomplished’,” Montana recalled. “Sometimes a song kind of leads you. So Jenai and I wanted to write something fun, something kind of lighthearted. And this was a rare instance where we had a lot of the music in advance of the lyric.”

Montana wasn’t used to having most of the music ready before writing the lyrics. In this case, the melody helped him and Wagoner develop the story.

“We had a concept where we wanted a young girl leaving home,” Montana said. “And I said, ‘Well, what about she left the suds in the bucket, the clothes hanging out on the line?’ And Jenai’s mouth dropped open, and she said, ‘I love that.’ Because it just seemed like a unique way to say she left in a hurry.”
