Despite Carolina’s dominance in possession, the only goals of the night came from Summer Denigan in the 17th minute and Hope Munson in the 60th. The Tar Heels knocked on the door for several more goals in both halves, forcing seven saves out of Mustang keeper Aubrey Brown. Carolina’s shots were split evenly across the first and second halves: 15 in each.
Thursday’s match was the first this season in which Carolina held an opponent without a shot, on target or otherwise. It was also the first in which UNC totaled at least 30 shots of its own.
With the win, UNC positions itself closer to winning the outright ACC regular-season title for the first time since 2019. As it stands, the Tar Heels have 21 points with a 7-1 league record. Notre Dame is in second place with 19 points at 6-1-1, but the Fighting Irish have two matches remaining to UNC’s one, after Carolina had an earlier match at Florida State cancelled due to inclement weather. Wake Forest also has a chance, sitting at 16 points with two matches to go. The Demon Deacons could clinch the outright title if they win their final two matches, UNC drops its season finale and Notre Dame also loses twice.
Carolina will wrap up the regular season when it visits No. 12 Louisville Thursday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m.
