The UNC field hockey and men’s soccer teams were both in action against Triangle rivals Friday night. Over in Durham, the field hockey team beat No. 6 Duke for the 16th consecutive time to clinch a share of the ACC regular-season crown, while in Chapel Hill the men’s soccer team drew 1-1 against NC State in the regular season finale.
In the hotly-contested field hockey game, Ryleigh Heck put the Tar Heels ahead 2-0 with goals in the second and third quarters, but UNC had to hold on for dear life as Duke cut the lead in half early in the fourth and kept manufacturing chances. The Blue Devils had a shot to tie with 4:12 remaining which Tar Heel goalie Tessa Shahbo stopped, then earned a pair of penalty corners in a span of less than a minute. On the second of those penalty corners, Shahbo again preserved the lead with a save, parrying Duke’s final chance of the game with 66 seconds to go.
Shahbo, a Harvard transfer making just her third start, stood tall with four saves in total. Carolina had controlled possession for the most part prior to Duke’s final flurry, firing 10 total shots to the Blue Devils’ five in the opening 45 minutes.
The 2-1 win moved UNC into a three-way tie for first place atop the ACC with Duke and Wake Forest at 6-2 in league play. Carolina will be the top seed in next week’s ACC Tournament, which is being hosted in Chapel Hill at Karen Shelton Stadium for the first time. UNC is set to face No. 8 seed Stanford in the opening round Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 10 a.m.

In men’s soccer, the Tar Heels were also playing for ACC Tournament positioning when they hosted NC State at Dorrance Field. The match remained scoreless well into the second half before Campbell transfer Evans Dapaah came through clutch with his first goal of the season in the 85th minute. It looked to be the match winner until NC State stole some consolation late, netting a goal in the 89th minute to force a 1-1 draw.
The result was a damaging one for UNC’s ACC Tournament seed, as the Tar Heels could have risen as high as a tie for third in the conference standings with a win, but instead will settle for the No. 7 seed in the upcoming conference tournament with a 3-1-4 league record. The Tar Heels will face No. 10 seed Cal, which drew with UNC earlier in the year, in the tournament’s opening round Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m.
