Rita Moreno is turning 95 on December 11, and the legendary star wants to be roasted on her special day.
“We’re going to have a dinner, and I’m sure people will be insulting me all night,” she told E! News. “Why not?” she said. “It’s just a wonderful way to celebrate. So, I can’t wait.”
Moreno is a member of the coveted EGOT circle, winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Award. She began her trailblazing 80-year career at 13, appearing on Broadway in Skydrift. In 1961, she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for West Side Story. TIME also named her Woman of the Year.
On October 27, she received her latest honor, the Vida y Legado (Life & Legacy) Award at the Día De Muertos event in Los Angeles.
“I think it’s special,” she said of the award honoring her for lifetime achievement. “It’s special because it’s Hispanic, and that makes me really, ultra proud.” However, Moreno remains dissatisfied with the progress of Latinos in Hollywood.
“I hope it gets better. It’s not good enough yet,” she remarked. “Latinos are still struggling to get roles in movies.”
Moreno has appeared in more than 50 films and is slated to star alongside Harvey Keitel and Roselyn Sanchez in the upcoming thriller Theirs.
She says one key to her longevity is projecting a positive attitude.
“I call it spreading joy,” she commented. “If I see someone on the street who has a beautiful jacket on, I don’t mind just stopping and saying, ‘Excuse me, that is a beautiful jacket, you have good taste.’ I found in my life that that makes people very happy.”
Moreno was born in Puerto Rico in 1931, and when she was five, her family moved to New York City, where she began studying dance. She became a professional dancer in nightclubs at the age of nine. Her performance singing and dancing to the classic song “America” in West Side Story is iconic. She enjoys watching Dancing with the Stars; however, when asked if she will appear on the show, she made it clear she won’t participate.
“Hell no,” she replied. “I’ve got 95-year-old knees.”
