Amanda Kloots‘ son, Elvis Cordero was just 10 months old when his dad Nick Cordero died of COVID-19 complications in 2020. Now 7 years old, he sat down with his mom for a candid conversation about his late dad.
In what may be one of the most heart-wrenching moments of the mother-and-son chat that took place on Kloots’ podcast, Good Grief With Amanda Kloots, this week, Elvis, unprompted, said he wished his dad was still alive since he was a baby when he died.
“When I was a baby, I felt like I had zero brain cells,” he said. “So like I didn’t know who this guy is, who she is, who [he] is. So the thing I wish [is that] he was still alive now. Now I actually know who he is.”
Kloots, a dancer and TV personality, went on to assure her son that, “You are so much like your dad, and it is so fun to be around you because I have like a mini version of your daddy.”

Nick, a Broadway actor known for his roles in Waitress and A Bronx Tale, died in July of 2020 after battling COVID-19 for months. He was hospitalized for over 90 days, during which “he was given a temporary pacemaker, underwent a leg amputation and was put into a medically induced coma,” according to the Los Angeles Times. He was 41.
Kloots documented his health struggles, regularly posting updates on social media.

Elsewhere in the conversation, Elvis also recalled that Nick’s favorite musician was Prince, and that he “sang songs and did shows and stuff” when talking about his career. Elvis also shared his understanding of grief.
“People are scared of it, but I don’t understand why that’s true,” he said, and Kloots noted that grief doesn’t have to be scary and can be talked about.
Elvis also went off camera to grab a special item that helps him remember his dad: a pillow with his photo on it.
“I really think this is cool because…the thing I love about it is that it says ‘I love you Elvis,’ and I just love it so much,” he said. “He passed away, but I love my daddy so much, and he’s just like me because I wear sweatpants and a hoodie every day to school.” ?
