Kim Kardashian was on high alert when her doctor told her she had esophagitis.
The Skims co-founder, 46, recalled how her father, Robert Kardashian, died of esophageal cancer in 2003 at age 59, just two months after he was diagnosed with the condition.
“So I’ve seen a couple of doctors, and it’s been heavy on my mind lately,” Kim said on the Thursday, Oct. 29, episode of The Kardashians.
She continued, “I haven’t really told too many people about this, just because I think it’s something that really hits home for me and I just don’t really wanna go there. With my dad having passed away from esophagus cancer, hopefully I can just take medication and this will go away.”
During the preview for the next episode, however, she is seen going into a hospital.
“The doctor says my esophagus has these irregularities, and I have to have them cut out,” Kim said. “It’s the same thing my dad had.”

According to The Mayo Clinic, esophagitis is “the swelling, irritation, or inflammation of the mucosal lining of the esophagus — the muscular tube that carries food and liquid from your mouth to your stomach.”
According to The Cleveland Clinic, “it might feel like chest pain, or it might make swallowing painful or difficult.”
The Mayo Clinic said it is most frequently caused by Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), “where stomach acid repeatedly splashes back into the esophagus.”
Other causes include Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE), which is an allergic or immune-system reaction involving a buildup of white blood cells in the esophageal lining, in addition to medication, infections, radiation, eating disorders, or swallowing caustic chemicals.
Chronic esophagitis is linked to esophageal cancer, but most people with the condition never develop it, according to The American Cancer Society.
In 2019, UCLA Health opened the Robert G. Kardashian Center for Esophageal Health.
“Our family is proud to pay tribute to our father by partnering with UCLA Health to establish the Robert G. Kardashian Center for Esophageal Health,” Kim said at the event. “We hope to save lives and help the community for many years to come in honor of our father.”
