Speaking with Extra following her guest judge appearance on Tuesday night’s episode of Dancing with the Stars, the iconic ballroom dancer shared her thoughts on the Gilmore Girls episode where the show’s matriarch Emily Gilmore, played by Kelly Bishop, explains to her granddaughter Rory, played by Alexis Bledel, all about Ballas and her husband.
In the scene, Emily says the dancer and her husband, Corky Ballas, are dancing the foxtrot. She also says that Corky is writing a musical and that their son, Mark Ballas in real life, is named Corky Jr.
“Well, that’s very interesting because, as she’s saying, Corky and Shirley [are] doing ballroom dancing; they’re actually showing a quick step, and we never danced waltz, foxtrot, tango, or quickstep,” Shirley said. “We danced the Latin dances: cha-cha, rumba, paso doble, and jive, so that’s really interesting.”“And the fact that Corky was writing a musical? I don’t know where she got that from, but that never happened,” she added. “And Corky Jr.? The little one, Mark? Yeah, cute,” she quipped.
For context, the Ballases are world champions in ballroom dance who competed in the 1980s and 1990s. They were married for 22 years and their son Mark has become a staple on DWTS. Shirley, for her part, is a judge on Strictly Come Dancing, the UK version of DWTS.

Shirley’s appearance on Extra followed her guest-judge role on DWTS’ Horror Movie Night, where the low scores she gave the show’s pairs — particularly to contestants Julia Stiles and Tatyana Ali — were considered to be as spooky as their performances.
“Now, to me, those scores are actually still quite good because they’re not twos and threes!” she said in an ABC interview following the live show this week. “I am still giving out threes on week seven on Strictly, but it’s acceptable over there [in the UK]. I’ve never been a great person of fluff, which is, ‘You’re all great.’ I like people to get some knowledge.”
