Rachel Campos-Duffy isn’t quite sure what all the Alex Cooper fuss is about.
The TV host and former Real World star took a blunt swipe at Cooper and her hugely popular Call Her Daddy podcast during a discussion about marriage and divorce on The Girls this week.
The conversation began with a clip of Cooper talking to actress Sophia Bush about leaving a marriage and wondering whether something better is out there.
“We can get really, really in our heads about, oh my God, I feel like I’m, maybe I shouldn’t leave this marriage because can I even get better?” Cooper said in the clip. “And the answer is always yes.”
“The answer is always yes,” Bush agreed. “And this idea that it’s too late or you’re too old or who are you to want more? That’s patriarchy. That is crazy. We don’t need it.”
After Riley Gaines identified Cooper as the host of Call Her Daddy and noted her popularity among Gen Z women, Campos-Duffy had a rather pointed question.
“Why is she so damn popular?” Campos-Duffy asked. “I just looked up how much she makes a year, and it’s like $20 million.”
Gaines offered her own explanation, recalling the sexually explicit advice Cooper became known for during the earlier years of Call Her Daddy.
“I think that’s largely how she has built her brand, is encouraging sexual experimentation, many different partners, do what feels good for your body,” Gaines said.
Melissa DeRosa wondered whether Cooper’s approach was “more like for the shock value of it” or an authentic reflection of the podcaster herself, while Kat Timpf characterized the early Call Her Daddy style as “female locker room talk.”
The panel also questioned whether Cooper still follows the lifestyle associated with her earlier podcast persona now that she’s married and has a child.
“It doesn’t seem she subscribes to what she’s talking about,” DeRosa said.
“That’s how it’s appearing to me,” Gaines responded.
Campos-Duffy pointed to just how open Cooper has been about her personal life, while Gaines also brought up Cooper’s public falling-out with former Unwell Network star Alix Earle.
“I am an Earle girl,” Gaines declared. “I support Alex Earle through and through.”
But the discussion wasn’t entirely one-sided.
DeRosa, who has been divorced herself, said she didn’t interpret Cooper’s comments as literally as some of her co-hosts did. She argued that women in toxic or chronically unhappy relationships should know that staying isn’t their only option.
Still, DeRosa questioned the influence Cooper’s message could have on younger listeners.
“She’s an influencer. She’s making a bazillion dollars. She says a lot of things to get a lot of attention,” DeRosa said.
She added that people shouldn’t be taught that “if you’re married today, just get divorced in a year when things get tough.”
“That’s not what marriage is for,” she said, arguing that there has to be “a sort of middle ground here.”
Campos-Duffy was considerably less convinced by Cooper’s message.
“The problem is—a lot of the good pickings are gone [the older you get]. … and back to what Alex Cooper was saying, when she’s like, you can find somebody better. If you marry a second time, you’re even more likely to get divorced. The stats aren’t that good for finding someone else. … And so I just think that her whole ‘hookup culture, just try everything’ [is not it],” she said later in the discussion while questioning the idea that someone can necessarily find a better partner.
And when the conversation eventually returned to Cooper’s suggestion that something better could be waiting outside a marriage, Campos-Duffy offered one final rebuttal.
“It’s dangerous, too, when you’re in a marriage and if your mentality is like Alex Cooper, which is like, just think about how much better it can be. I mean, sometimes you just got to work through s–t,” she said.
