ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Travaris Meeks, a junior at the Aquinas Institute, is being honored for refusing to get into a fight when an adult pushed him.
Travaris is among this fall’s recipients of the Do the Right Thing awards. He was roller skating last spring when he accidentally collided with a woman while trying to avoid a younger child. He immediately apologized and checked to make sure she was okay. That’s when the woman’s husband confronted him and pushed him. However, Travaris refused to respond with aggression.
“I thought about that in that moment and just thought, let me stay calm,” Meeks said.
Meeks’s mother nominated him, saying her son is full of kindness and does the right thing even when it’s difficult.
Any student in grades K-12 in a Monroe County school is eligible for a nomination. The good deed must have occurred within one year of the nomination. Anyone over 18 years of age can submit a nomination form, including family, friends, school staff, and coaches.
The Rochester Police Department has held the Do the Right Thing awards since 1995. You can learn more about nominating a student here. See past winners here.
