The spin-off, which sees Wahlberg reprise his role from the original series as Danny Reagan, is currently airing its second season on CBS in the US.
However, he noted that Selleck’s return wouldn't happen without certain conditions being met. "I love him and respect him so much. I know what it will require," he explained.
He continued: "It’s going to require the most thoughtful, elegant episode that the Brandons [co-creators Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis] and I can pull together. And he will do it, but it has to be something really special, because he takes what he does very seriously. And he takes the legacy of the show seriously. He takes Frank Reagan seriously.”
Selleck played NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan on Blue Bloods from its pilot episode in 2010 through to its final chapter in 2024.
The spin-off follows Wahlberg’s Danny as he trades New York for a new life as an investigator in the titular Massachusetts city, and also stars Sonequa Martin-Green as Detective Lena Silver.
