A bride's search for her mother's missing wedding dress goes viral ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

A Chicago-native was hoping to use her mother’s wedding dress on her big day, but is now on a longshot quest to find it after discovering the wrong dress in a storage box.

Incredibly, one positive did emerge from the story, as a mother who lost her daughter has been reunited with a dress she thought was lost forever.

That dress had been returned to Lexie Ippolito’s mother after she sent it to a wedding dress preservation company contracted with David’s Bridal approximately 16 years ago.

When Lexie looked inside the box to try the dress on, with her wedding looming next fall, she realized that it was somebody else’s.

“Basically, both of our stomachs just dropped,” she said.

She ultimately posted a video to TikTok seeking help in finding the dress, and thousands of people have liked it and numerous brides-to-be have offered to help her in her quest. She said her mother has helped her stay calm during an emotionally turbulent time.

“My mom really kept it together, because she knows how sentimental I am, and how I excited I was to wear the dress,” she said.

Eventually, Lexie closely inspected the dress and realized that it had a tag on it, identifying the woman who had worn it during her wedding in 2007.

That bride was Heidi Webber McClellan, a California woman who tragically died following a rejected bone marrow transplant in 2009. Her mother sent the dress to David’s Bridal for preservation, but unfortunately did not receive the dress back, and has long thought it was lost forever.

After consulting with obituaries and a search for the dress’ owner, Lexie is now sending that dress back to Heidi’s mother, giving her an incredible gift of closure 17 years after her daughter’s death.

“She was in tears. She was saying she hopes that now they can use this dress for her granddaughter someday,” Lexie said.

Still, Lexie is hoping her story will also have a happy ending, but she says at least she had the honor of reuniting a grieving mother with the missing item.

“If I don’t ever find my mom’s dress, I’m so, so grateful Heidi’s ended up being in our box, so I could help bring it home,” she said.

She’s asking families who used David’s Bridal for dress preservation in 2010 to check to make sure their dresses are actually theirs, in hopes she can find her mother’s dress before her Chicago wedding in September 2027.
