George Strait recently received a special honor from the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, but the country music legend also had something to say about the next chapter of his life. Despite a career filled with No. 1 songs and major milestones, Strait said he’s done trying to land another hit on country radio.
Strait became just the second person to receive the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame’s Career Maker Award, following Reba McEntire. Although he appreciated the recognition, he admitted that his days of pursuing radio success were over.
His latest album, Cowboys and Dreamers, was released in 2024 and included songs such as “Three Drinks Behind” and “Honky Tonk Hall of Fame,” featuring Chris Stapleton. The record reached No. 6 on the U.S. Top Country Albums chart.
For Strait, this chapter is about looking back on what he’s achieved rather than pursuing more chart success. The country legend also stressed that his remarks weren’t intended as a dig at country radio.
“That’s not a comment against country radio. I get it. They’ve been very good to me over the years and I really appreciate that. I also thank them for still playing my old stuff,” Strait said.
Although some fans may have been disappointed by Strait’s comments, others understood his perspective. One fan noted that even a legendary career has its limits. “Everybody has a shelf life at country radio. Strait is no exception, despite his great success over many years. He’s not chasing chart success at his age, and with where his life is. He’s kicked back and enjoying the fruits of his labor. And good for him!”
Others felt Strait had every reason to sit back and enjoy the career he’s built, noting that his songs aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. “200 years from now there will still be music playing on country radio … but there will always only forever be 1 King George. That’s a fact,” another fan wrote.
Many fans also agreed that Strait’s music will always have a place in their lives. “His volume of work is prodigious and will always exceed any other artist for top Country Music. I am honored to listen to him and will be until the day I pass on. It is very acceptable for him to be selective with his time and his family,” a third added.
