It’s that time of year again! And we’re not talking about tree-trimming, gift-buying time, either. Nope, we’re talking about the time when people rewatch all their favorite horror movies and start wondering if they might share their home with a not-so-friendly ghost. But which states in the U.S. are the most obsessed with haunted houses?

First of all, it’s worth pointing out that Americans make 1,598,700 haunting-related Google searches every month, translating to approximately 52,560 a day or one every 1.6 seconds. Perhaps unsurprisingly, searches for “is my house haunted address search” increase by 5,000% in October.

In an attempt to discover which states are the most concerned with potential hauntings, GambleMind analyzed Google search volumes for 50 paranormal-related terms across the country, including “is my house haunted,” “poltergeist signs,” “ghost hunters,” “spirit box” and “Ouija board.”

According to the results, California leads the top 10 with 212,950 average monthly searches; however, Texas comes in at a very close second with 212,900. The two states are also the only ones where “psychic,” “poltergeist” and “Ouija board” each draw an estimated 50,000 searches a month.

In third place is New York with 108,000 searches. 50,000 of those searches are for “psychic,” and hiring-related terms account for 67% of the state’s searches (as opposed to 41% nationally). Rounding out the rest of the top 10, we have Florida (63,100), Pennsylvania (53,200) and Ohio (51,850), followed by Illinois (43,300), North Carolina (38,800), Georgia (37,900) and Tennessee (33,400).

Which states are the least concerned with supernatural occurrences? Alaska, Vermont and Wyoming each have just 4,000 searches a month, the lowest totals in the country.

The data seems to suggest that most people aren’t looking to confirm whether or not their house is haunted, but what to do in the case of a definite haunting.

“Is my house haunted” or “is my home haunted” make up only 1.1% of the total searches (18,350 a month). On the other hand, searches for professionals including psychics, mediums, ghost hunters, demonologists and exorcists make up 40.6% of all searches (648,950 a month), with searches for equipment like EMF meters, Ouija boards and spirit boxes accounting for an additional 34.6% (553,850). Another 18.8% of searches are for poltergeist and entities, while 4.8% were for haunted places and tours.

Whatever state you’re living in this Halloween, happy haunting!
