Oscar-nominated Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi has been sentenced to five years and one month in prison by a Tehran Revolutionary court (in absentia) on Tuesday, October 27.
According to Variety, the sentence also includes the confiscation of his assets, a two-year ban on travel, and a two-year ban on social media. He has not been apprehended as a result of the sentence.
While talking about the sentence, Panahi’s lawyer, Mostafa Nili, told Emtedad (via Variety), an Iranian reformist outlet, that he and Panahi only found out about the latest ruling after their bank accounts were frozen. The ruling appears to have been issued without any prior notice of the hearing, and the charges in this particular case have not been made public. As of writing this piece, Panahi has three legal cases pending.
The new sentence follows on from the separate one-year sentence which Panahi received in December 2025 for charges of propagating material against the Iranian government.
Even though the case file stated that the filmmaker was living outside Iran, Panahi returned to Iran in March 2026, having traveled abroad to promote his Oscar-nominated film, It Was Just an Accident. His return was, of course, in spite of the existing legal proceedings against him and the prospect of further punishment.
Panahi has been under restriction and sanction for his work and political views for many years. In 2010, he was sentenced to six years in prison and a 20-year ban on filmmaking, screenwriting, giving interviews, and traveling abroad. He was arrested again in July 2022 and spent around seven months in prison before being released in February 2023.
Despite the restrictions he was operating under, Panahi continued to make films (This Is Not a Film, Taxi Tehran and No Bears, to name a few). His films were very much concerned with censorship, with inequality and with the treatment of women in Iranian society.
His most recent film, It Was Just an Accident, took the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2025 and was France’s submission to the International Feature Film category at the 2026 Oscars. Previous films have also received significant international acclaim, with The Circle winning the Golden Lion at Venice in 2000 and Taxi Tehran taking the Golden Bear in Berlin in 2015.
Panahi’s career has gone on regardless of the numerous attempts to curtail his filmmaking, and this latest decision is yet another in the long line of developments in his ongoing battle with the Iranian authorities.
