With the 2026 Illinois general election just a week away, many are marking off registering to vote from their to-do list to ensure they’re eligible to mark a ballot.

Illinois voters are given the opportunity to register automatically when they visit Secretary of State’s Office locations around the state unless they opt out of doing so, according to Illinois state law. So, if you went in to get a Real ID recently, it’s likely you’re registered to vote at the address on your ID.

If you’re not sure whether or not you’re registered to vote, or wanting to check to make sure your voter registration is up to date before the big day on Nov. 3, we’ve got you covered.

How to check if you’re registered to vote

The Illinois State Board of Elections offers a registration lookup tool on their website. To look up if you’re registered, you need to enter your first and last name, birthday and zip code.

For Chicago residents, the city also offers its own voter registration search tool that will also provide your precinct polling place or closest vote center. It also allows residents to view a sample ballot and check the status of their vote by mail request.

Can you still register to vote online?

No, online voter registration has closed in Illinois and will re-open after the election, on Nov. 5.

How can you still register to vote?

Though both standard and online voter registration are now closed, there are still ways you can register to vote — including on Election Day itself. That’s through grace period voter registration.

To vote through the grace period registration, voters have to show two forms of identification, and one has to show their current address. A driver’s license, bank statement, lease, utility bill or even a state ID can each serve as a form of identification.

Once voters show proper identification, they must then cast their ballot immediately.

Grace period registration is only available in-person at designated sites, including your local county clerk’s office, an early polling place, or at select sites on Election Day. Voters should check with their local election authority to determine the locations and hours available in their area.
