Chicago Bears defensive lineman Montez Sweat is returning this week from a two-game suspension, and he spoke to media for the first time since his punishment.
Sweat was suspended for two games for violating the NFL’s performance enhancing substances policy, and he told reporters at Halas Hall Tuesday that the positive test was an accident, but that it’s something he will have to deal with for the rest of his career in the league.
“It’s something I’ve got to live with for my career. I never want to cheat the game and I never do it intentionally,” he said.
Sweat said that his teammates have welcomed him back, and that accountability is something he’s focused on as he returns to the field.
“Nobody wants to go look someone in the eye after you’ve done something detrimental like that to the team,” he said. “Those are the things you have to do to move forward.”
Originally drafted by the Washington Commanders, Sweat was traded to the Bears in October 2023, then signed a four-year extension worth $98 million, including $72 million in guaranteed money.
In parts of four seasons with the Bears, Sweat has 23.5 sacks in 47 games, with 117 combined tackles and 48 quarterback hits.
This season Sweat has appeared in five games, registering a pair of sacks.
His absence was felt intensely by the Bears’ pass rush, as the team is also dealing with the loss of Dayo Odeyingbo, who is currently on injured reserve.
They’ll certainly have to generate some quarterback pressure in their next game, as they’ll face Sam Darnold and the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football.
