Zavier Scott Gets A Promotion, Which Reminds Me There Is A Kyle Monangai Update ...Middle East

The Chicago Bears’ latest roster moves have me thinking about what’s up with Kyle Monangai.

But before we get to the Monangai stuff, let’s get into the transaction that got the wheels turning:

The #Bears have signed RB Zavier Scott to the Active Roster from the club’s Practice Squad and released DB Nick McCloud.

Running back Zavier Scott is now on the active roster. In a corresponding move, the team has released defensive back Nick McCloud. Scott signed with the Bears’ practice squad after the preseason roster-cut deadline. The former Minnesota Vikings running back has been elevated from the practice squad to the active roster for each of the last three games. In other words, the team needed to decide on keeping him on the 53-player roster or letting him go. The decision has been made, and Scott joins Chicago’s backfield on a full-time basis for the time being. I love seeing a fringe player’s perseverance pay off with a spot on the 53-man roster.

Scott, 27, hasn’t appeared on an offensive snap this season. However, he has established himself as a valued special teams contributor, playing on 58 percent of that phase’s snaps in his three-game stint to this point. Still, having a third running back isn’t the worst thing in the world, especially with Kyle Monangai’s injury situation still keeping him off the field.

What’s the Latest on Kyle Monangai?

Kyle Monangai ran it 30 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns in the Bears’ Week 4 win against the New York Jets. Unfortunately, Monangai hasn’t seen the field since. The second-year running back has been dealing with thumb and turf toe injuries that came about from that game. Monangai would likely be gutting it out had it just been the thumb issue, but the turf toe has kept him off the practice field altogether. And while the Bears are 2-1 in his absence, Monangai has been missed.

Before the Bears-Patriots game on Thursday Night Football, NFL insider Ian Rapoport offered an update on Monangai that slipped past us on what was a busy game day. That said, Rap Sheet’s update feels even more relevant now that we have the Scott roster news to discuss:

“It’s really the toe injury that’s more of a thing than the thumb injury. If it was just the thumb, he would be playing. It is turf toe. It was believed to be about three or maybe four weeks. … But potentially, he is nearing a return.”

The takeaway here is that Kyle Monangai appears to be nearing a return. That is good news. As the folks at DaWindyCity Productions point out, the Bears are averaging 196.3 rushing yards per game when Monangai is available. Without him, the team is averaging just 98.3 rushing yards per game. We’ve also seen D’Andre Swift take on a larger workload while Monangai has been out. Roschon Johnson has seen an uptick in snaps, too. Luther Burden III and Zavion Thomas have also gotten touches out of the backfield.

But the bad news is that Monangai’s absence could reach a fourth game. Hence, it makes sense that Chicago would elevate another running back to the mix — if only to keep the guys atop the depth chart fresh. Ultimately, we’ll keep an eye on this situation and share updates when they become available. We won’t get the first injury report of the week until Thursday, so stay tuned.
