While late actor Walter Koenig, who died on October 25 at the age of 90, took pride in his Star Trek role as Pavel Chekov, he wasn’t too happy about one of the franchise’s films.
In a 2025 interview on That’s Classic, Koenig, who began playing Chekov during the second season of Star Trek: The Original Series, said he felt disappointed in the 1991 film, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. He said he was unhappy about the movie’s lack of recognition for the Star Trek: TOS secondary characters, like Chekov, Montgomery “Scotty” Scott (James Doohan), Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols), and Hikaru Sulu (George Takei).
“I was very upset with Star Trek VI, not because it wasn’t a good script. It was a good script. It was intelligently written and well performed, etc., but I felt that the subordinate characters were given a short shrift. And we’ve been with Star Trek, I mean, I’ve been with it since 1967. George and Nichelle and Jimmy had been with it since 1966,” said the actor. “And I thought there should have been a scene for each of us that acknowledged, you know, our endurance and our loyalty and our continuity being part of all this.”
He clarified that he “was never concerned that [his] part wasn’t big enough” as Chekov in the Star Trek franchise. Rather, he believed Chekov, Uhura, Sulu, and Scotty deserved to be treated as “three-dimensional” characters in the final film that focused on the Star Trek: TOS crew.

“I was disappointed, very disappointed, and I kind of overreacted. That’s who I am, and so I saw articles about our complaining, complaining about me complaining, that I should feel just so lucky to be a part of this, that I had no right to feel umbrage,” said Koenig. “I’m who I am. I wasn’t a happy camper. I was pleased that the movie was good, you know, that everybody did a good job, who had a role to play. That was worthwhile, but, yeah, I was disappointed.”
