Walter Koenig, the actor who made Ensign Pavel Chekov one of “Star Trek’s” most beloved characters, has died. He was 90.
According to his talent agent, Koenig died of natural causes on Sunday at his home in North Hollywood, surrounded by his daughter and niece. His daughter, Danielle, also confirmed her father’s death.
His Final Hours
Koenig died overnight at his North Hollywood home, according to Zachery McGinnis, the founder of Galactic Productions, an appearance agency that represented him. McGinnis attributed his death to old age. He had just turned 90 in September.
In a statement, his representatives remembered him as an actor whose talent, warmth and performances left a lasting mark on generations of fans. They added that through countless convention appearances, he shared his kindness and wit with everyone lucky enough to meet him, and that he truly understood what “Star Trek” meant to people.
The statement closed by thanking him for the memories and the inspiration, and for boldly going where few have gone before.
A Heartbroken Tribute From George Takei
Among the first to pay tribute was his “Star Trek” co-star George Takei, who wrote that his heart was heavy. The two met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s and stayed friends for nearly six decades. Koenig was the best man when Takei married his husband, Brad, in 2008, and the wedding happened to fall on Koenig’s birthday.
“Walter was more than Chekov,” Takei wrote, describing him as a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man and a loyal friend.
A Legendary Career
He joined “Star Trek” at the start of its second season and appeared in 36 of the show’s episodes. He went on to play Chekov in the first seven “Star Trek” films, released between 1979 and 1991. Decades later, he lent his voice to President Anton Chekov in a 2023 episode of “Star Trek: Picard.” He also played the memorable Psi Cop Alfred Bester on “Babylon 5.”
Koenig was married to his wife, Judy, for nearly 60 years until her death in 2022. He was also predeceased by their son, actor Andrew Koenig, who died in 2010. He is survived by his daughter, Danielle.
