Caleb Williams fined nearly $12K for cleats, but could he be fined again? ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has been flying high in the team’s last two victories, but his wallet is a little bit lighter these days.

Williams recently returned to the field after missing three games, leading the Bears to wins over the Atlanta Falcons and most recently the New England Patriots.

While his on-field exploits thrilled Bears fans, something a lot more subtle caught the attention of the NFL, and resulted in Williams being fined nearly $12,000.

So what happened?

According to the league, Williams was fined $11,941 for his footwear, as he was wearing cleats produced by a new company called Caddix. According to its website, the company’s cleats are designed to “reduce the rotational force on the knees and ankles,” and are manufactured to help players avoid non-contact injuries while quickly changing directions on the field.

While the cleats themselves weren’t the issue, Williams was fined because he did not cover the company’s logo on the shoes during the Bears’ game against the Falcons.

According to league rules, the NFL only allows players to display apparel logos for companies the league has marketing partnerships with, a list that includes Nike, Adidas and Under Armour.

Caddix does not fall into that camp, and as a result Williams was supposed to cover the company’s logo on his shoes but did not do so either in the game against the Falcons or in the subsequent game against the Patriots, which could result in him receiving another fine from the league.

For those curious, Williams was wearing a white version of the cleats in Week 1 and 2, but the company’s logo was not visible. Williams switched to black cleats in Weeks 6 and 7, and the logo was visible on those shoes.

Under NFL rules, players are fined nearly $12,000 for “unauthorized logos, branding or intellectual property” on their uniforms for a first offense. A second offense carries a fine of $23,882, according to the league.

The league has not yet announced whether Williams will be fined for wearing the cleats against New England.
