The animation world is mourning one of its brightest voices. Eric Bauza, the man who brought Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck to life for a whole new generation, died suddenly on Sunday, Oct. 25, at a home in Los Angeles County. He was just 46.
His family shared the heartbreaking news on his Instagram account Sunday night. In their statement, they remembered him as an Emmy-winning voice actor and the modern voice of the Looney Tunes stars, along with dozens of other cartoon characters fans grew up with. Still processing the loss, they kept their message short, closing with: “More details to come.”
Since then, some answers have come. NBC Los Angeles reported that the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner listed his cause of death as hypertensive cardiovascular disease, with the manner of death ruled natural.
Hypertensive cardiovascular disease is damage to the heart and blood vessels caused by long-term high blood pressure. It can build quietly over years, often without clear warning signs, which may explain why his passing came as such a painful surprise to those who loved him. His family hasn’t shared anything more about his health, and they’ve asked for time before saying more.
Those closest to him are still taking in the news. His longtime manager, Judy Coppage, said his death was a shock to everyone and that he’ll be deeply missed. She remembered him as a unique, versatile talent who was truly loved, calling his passing “a profound loss for his family, the animation industry and his fans.”
Born in the Toronto suburb of Scarborough in 1979, Bauza began his career as a character designer before finding his calling behind the microphone. Over more than two decades, he lent his voice to shows like The Fairly OddParents, Breadwinners, Superjail! and Marvel’s X-Men ‘97.
But it was Looney Tunes that became his life’s work. Carrying on the legacy of Mel Blanc, he gave voice to Bugs, Daffy, Porky Pig, Tweety, Marvin the Martian, Elmer Fudd and many more. His work on Looney Tunes Cartoons earned him the first-ever Children’s and Family Emmy for Outstanding Voice Performance in an Animated Program in 2022, followed by Emmys in 2023 and 2024. In 2023, he also became the new voice of Buster Bunny on Tiny Toons Looniversity.
