Junior Nationals qualifier Karly Whitehead has announced her verbal commitment to stay in-state and swim at Southern Methodist University beginning in the fall of 2028. She publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am beyond blessed and overjoyed to announce my commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Southern Methodist University! This opportunity would not be possible without the endless support of my family, coaches, and everyone who has helped me along the way. A huge thank you to my mom and dad for your unconditional love and support. Thank you to Coaches Aaron Moran, Daniel Roa, Dave, and Stephanie Barnes for helping me grow as both a swimmer and a person. I’m also incredibly grateful to Coach Ozzie, Coach Lisa, and the entire SMU coaching staff for this amazing opportunity. I’m so excited for what’s ahead. PONY UP!!
A junior at Samuel V. Champion High School in Boerne, Whitehead has been a member of her school’s varsity swimming team since her freshman year. She also trains year-round with Alamo Area Aquatic Association, where she primarily specializes in backstroke.
The 2025-26 short course season saw Whitehead drop nearly three seconds in the 200 back and a second and a half in the 100 back. On the high school scene, she helped Samuel V. Champion win the 200 medley relay (26.18 leadoff) and 400 free relay (52.62 split) at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) 5A State Championships in February, where she also finished runner-up in the 100 back (55.10) and 10th with the 200 free relay (24.05 anchor). Her current best time of 55.01 in the 100 back came a few weeks earlier at Regions. She then set her 2:01.16 PB in the 200 back shortly after the high school season at Speedo Sectionals – Justin, where she made the ‘B’ finals in both the 50 and 200 back.
Over the summer, Whitehead clocked times of 1:02.78/2:18.30 in the 100/200 LCM backstroke events, which qualified her to compete at Summer Junior Nationals, where she placed 40th in the 100 back (1:04.31), 41st in the 50 back (30.10), and 55th in the 200 back (2:20.50).

To earn a second swim at the meet, times of 52.61 and 1:55.26 were needed in the backstroke events, putting Whitehead outside the cutoffs for now, though she still has nearly three full seasons of training ahead before lining up at her first conference meet.
Whitehead joins sprint freestyler Decker Stedman in committing to the Mustangs’ class of 2032 so far.
