Bears “Keep Calling” About Khalil Mack, and the 0-6 Chargers Keep Not Picking Up ...Middle East

Khalil Mack to the Bears won’t go away, and honestly, why should it?

The NFL Trade Deadline is on Nov. 10. With the Chicago Bears at 5-2, there is an expectation they will be active as they go about improving their roster. One player who continues to come up as a trade target is Mack, the Los Angeles Chargers edge rusher who spent some time in Chicago before being shipped off in a trade that kick-started the Bears’ rebuild. And it’s not as if those whispers will be quieted anytime soon.

This is from NFL insider Adam Schefter during ESPN’s Sunday morning pregame buildup show:

The Bears “Keep Calling” About a Khalil Mack Trade, But…

The money quote from Schefty: “The Chargers keep telling teams they’re not interested in dealing Khalil Mack. They want to win games. But they haven’t won any games so far, and they’re 0-6. And you have to wonder if a team like the Chicago Bears will keep calling to try to bring Khalil Mack back to Chicago.”

KHALIL MACK BACK TO THE BEARS “MAKES THE MOST SENSE,” ACCORDING TO LEAGUE SOURCES

Yeah, I heard it, too. There is no other way to frame this than to underscore that the Bears are calling the Chargers about a Mack trade, but Los Angeles is thwarting these conversations.

If I were Bears General Manager Ryan Poles, I’d keep calling just to be annoying. At some point, reality has to set in for the Chargers … right? They are 0-6 and ESPN’s FPI gives them a 0.1 percent chance to make the playoffs. Los Angeles’ projected record at this point is 4-13. Maybe this is the Chargers front office’s way of trying to use the media to push Chicago’s front office to sweeten the deal. Or maybe the Chargers are just that darn stubborn. In any case, it is clear that the Bears already have irons in the fire. I wonder what else is on the horizon.

The Bears’ interest in a Khalil Mack reunion isn’t new. In fact, the Bears have been sniffing around this possibility each of the last two offseasons. Unfortunately, each pursuit ended with Mack running it back with the Chargers. But with Mack’s deal expiring at the end of this season and Los Angeles’ playoff hopes dwindling with each passing moment, it is fair to wonder if he would be open to a return to Chicago. The Bears are legit and could use someone like him coming off the edge. This isn’t to say that Mack is the only name we’re monitoring right now. But he is certainly among the most intriguing. Stay tuned.
