Clint Murchison Jr. used a blackmailed fight song to buy a $600,000 NFL expansion team in 1960; 66 years later, Dallas Cowboys has raised $3 billion for charity ...Saudi Arabia

When Jerry Jones’ club hosts its Thanksgiving game next month, halftime will once again kick off the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign. The partnership dates back to 1997, and over that stretch the campaign has brought in more than $3 billion nationwide.

Jones has called the Salvation Army “the most efficient organization I think there is.” His daughter Charlotte Jones, the team’s chief brand officer, has pointed out that the money raised stays in local communities.

The franchise’s own beginnings were far less charitable. In the late 1950s, Texas oilman Lamar Hunt wanted a pro football team in Dallas. When the NFL turned him down, he helped launch a rival, the American Football League, and planted his Dallas Texans in his hometown.

The NFL answered by courting another young Texas millionaire, Clint Murchison Jr. But expansion needed unanimous approval, and Washington owner George Preston Marshall stood in the way.

Murchison had an ace up his sleeve. About a year earlier, he’d quietly bought the rights to Washington’s fight song, “Hail to the Redskins,” for $2,000. Right before the league meeting on January 28, 1960, he handed Marshall the copyright in exchange for his vote. The expansion passed, with a $600,000 fee.

Too late for the college draft, the club filled its roster with 36 players left unprotected by the other 12 teams. General manager Tex Schramm hired Tom Landry, the New York Giants’ defensive coordinator, as head coach.

The 1960 squad went 0-11-1, and the first winning season didn’t arrive until 1966. Murchison stuck with Landry anyway, and the payoff was 20 straight winning seasons and two Super Bowl titles.

Jones bought the team in 1989 and added three more championships. In September, Forbes valued it at $17 billion, the league’s most valuable club for the 20th year in a row.

Not bad at all for a roster of castoffs.
