An 18-year-old man in Germany has been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the death of a 14-year-old Indiana girl who died by suicide, the FBI and German public broadcaster NDR said.
The FBI’s Indianapolis office said Friday that agents and local police investigated the death of a 14-year-old Fort Wayne girl and shared their findings with German authorities, leading to the suspect’s arrest.
According to an NDR article translated into English, the suspect, who was 17 years old at the time, communicated with the girl through the video messaging platform Discord. He is accused of manipulating the teen into harming herself, ultimately leading to her death by suicide, while demanding that she record videos of her self-harm.
After the girl’s death, the suspect, a resident of Hamburg, allegedly tried to obtain recordings of the girl’s suicide, which authorities accused him of orchestrating. Following her death, the suspect allegedly threatened those close to the girl, saying he would release compromising recordings of her.
Hamburg police arrested the suspect Thursday and searched the home where he lived with his parents. The Hamburg Public Prosecutor’s Office has charged the suspect with murder and aggravated assault.
The case marked the third investigated by the prosecutor’s office in which minors were driven to commit serious self-harm or suicide through video chats.
According to NDR, the girl referenced “NMK,” or “Nefarious Maniac Cult,” in her recordings. Police in Fort Wayne, where the girl lived, later held a news conference warning the community about similar online groups that they said are contributing to deaths across the country.
WPTA, the NBC affiliate in Fort Wayne, reported messages and friend requests from such predators can escalate to grooming, sextortion, threats, and psychological manipulation.
“This is a worldwide problem. Fort Wayne and our surrounding community are not immune; these online extremists are targeting our children. It is happening in Fort Wayne,” FWPD Detective Brian Martin said.
