Ron Duguay wasn’t just a legend in the world of hockey, he was also a legend on the New York social scene in the ’80s. The former New York Rangers star, who died at the age of 69 on Oct. 22, once opened up about how he ended up in Gene Simmons‘ bed with Cher after a memorable night out at Studio 54.
“This is gonna be an exclusive thing because I’ve never been a kiss-and-tell type of guy,” Duguay said before diving further into the story on the debut episode of The New York Post‘s New York Rangers podcast, Up In The Blue Seats, in 2019.
It all started after the Rangers’ win against the New York Islanders at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 20, 1982. Duguay, who was 24 years old at the time, went to Studio 54 to celebrate the victory and said he was minding his own business when a woman, who happened to be Liza Minnelli, pointed at him and called him over. After Minnelli told him she liked the Rangers and had always wanted to meet him, she introduced him to Cher, who was busy dancing.
The “If I Could Turn Back Time’ singer, who was 35 at the time, didn’t hesitate to ask Duguay to join her on the dance floor.
“If you know Cher, if she wants something, she goes after it,” Duguay said in the interview. “Grabs me by the arm and says, ‘You dance?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ So we go and start dancing, we’re dancing to all this fun stuff back then — the Bee Gees, Rod Stewart, Billy Joel. To this day, if you Google ‘Ron Duguay and Cher,’ it breaks down to a slow song. Her head’s on my [shoulder]. She’s looking very comfortable. And you look at my face, and the expression on my face is like, ‘Oh my God, I’m dancing with Cher.’ I look like I don’t feel comfortable because I’m not comfortable, because I grew up as a Canadian watching Sonny & Cher.”
Cher then invited Duguay to Minnelli’s house but after they arrived and waited for the iconic actress in the lobby of her apartment building for around 30 minutes, the musician decided it was time to leave and go elsewhere.
“Where are we going?” Duguay asked.
“Just come with me, son,” Cher answered.
A cab brought them to a “beautiful” townhouse and before she unlocked the door, Cher turned to Duguay and told him, “By the way, I don’t beep, beep, beep on the first date.” He assured her he was “happy to just be here” and after walking into the residence and seeing gold records of KISS on the walls, he soon realized he was in Simmons’ home.
“So I’m in Gene Simmons’ townhouse, not sure why I’m there. Next thing I know, she told me, ‘We’re not doing anything tonight,’” Duguay recalled. “Next thing you know, we’re sitting on his bed. And that’s where the story stops.”
Years after Duguay’s unforgettable night with Cher, he found romance with Kim Alexis, whom he was married to from 1993-2016. At the time of his death, he was in a relationship with former governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin. They were first linked in 2022.
