Billy Corgan is speaking out about his friend Marilyn Manson after almost a dozen women accused him of sexual assault and abuse. The Smashing Pumpkins singer, 59, admitted that he “didn’t feel” the controversial rock star, 57, “was guilty” of the allegations, which started in 2021, and “knew personal things behind the scenes” that helped form his opinion, in the Oct. 22 episode of The New York Times’ Popcast.
“You have to stand by your friends, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have an opinion and that doesn’t mean you’re not critical,” he said. “In some cases I knew personal things behind the scenes that are not in the public sphere. I personally didn’t feel that he was guilty of the things he was being charged with.”Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner, has always denied the allegations and in Jan. 2025, the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office announced that no charges would be filed against him “after a comprehensive four-year investigation into allegations of domestic violence and sexual assault.” District Attorney Nathan Hochman said the allegations fell outside the statute of limitations and could not be proven.
Corgan felt the lack of charges against Manson “was commensurate with the person that I knew” but also realizes he couldn’t “be there for everything.”
“I guess it’s one of those things where I don’t want the world to tell me who my friends are and who I should associate with,” he explained. “That’s politically, socially, and in Brian’s case, we have a relationship that goes back close to 30 years.”
“I also knew the inside baseball of the case,” he added. “I knew certain people who were involved, and so you make those evaluations. At the end of the day, I feel I made the right determination, but if things had come out… Like people would ask me privately, ‘Well what happens if da da da…’ And I’d say, ‘If he’s guilty or anybody in that situation is guilty, they should go to jail.’
Some of the women who accused Manson of sexual assault include his former girlfriend Evan Rachel Wood and Esmé Bianco. Manson settled with Bianco in 2023 and filed a defamation suit against Wood in 2022. He dropped the defamation suit in 2024 and he and Wood eventually reached a settlement, which included him paying her attorney fees.
