The Winnipeg Jets were hoping to avoid a distraction during the Heritage Classic this weekend with all-star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck‘s season-opening, team-imposed suspension reportedly ending on Friday. It appears they’ve been able to do just that.
Hellebuyck is reportedly getting traded to the New Jersey Devils!
And hoo boy is this ever a blockbuster! The Jets received four players and two draft picks for one of the best goaltenders on the planet.

Winnipeg Jets goaltender Connor HellebuyckHell-uva Return for Winnipeg
The Jets made out incredibly well in this trade. Veteran forward Nick Bjugstad is on LTIR right now. The picks — a second-round pick in 2029 and a seventh-round pick in 2027 — will be nice assets for the future for Winnipeg. But they got three really nice pieces back that can help them more immediately.
Dawson Mercer is a marvelous add for Winnipeg. He’ll turn 25 next week and has a $4M cap hit thru this season, after which he’ll be a restricted free agent. I love his game as an all-around center. It’s now up to the Jets to get him locked-up beyond this season.
Alexander Command, 18, was the 12th overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. He’s another strong all-around center with some playmaking ability. He’s playing for Örebro in the SHL this season.
Nico Daws, 25, is a solid goaltender who can split starts for the Jets — or become a valuable trade piece at some point. He is signed thru next season at a very reasonable $1.1M cap hit.
The Jets did give up Hellebuyck, one of the best goaltenders of this era, to get that package. And they’ll get a look at him on Nov. 10 when the Devils visit Winnipeg. That could be a fun watch!
