I still cannot believe Ben Johnson let Cairo Santos attempt that field goal, and I REALLY cannot believe he hit it. Another great Bears win, man. Loving this team.
Pete Crow-Armstrong is also loving the Bears:PCA pulled up to Thursday Night Football ?⬇️ t.co/WQWl7HyTpy

— Ben Devine (@Chicago_NFL) October 22, 2026 A little more Bears-Cubs crossover, with quotes from PCA on Caleb Williams:Caleb Williams is the most recognizable star in Chicago sports. That comes with carrying the mantle of a franchise savior at a time where Chicago’s sports future is brighter than ever. A look inside Williams’ friendships with the city’s biggest sports figures – from Pete Crow-Armstrong to Matas Buzelis – and how showing up for each other fuels their desire for greatness. t.co/oGxDpK1yOW
— Courtney Cronin (@CourtneyRCronin) October 22, 2026 Finally, after a week of waiting, we get baseball back tonight at 7pm CT in the form of the Small Market World Series. I say it that way because it’s going to be the framing we keep hearing about … and it’s fair! These are two of the smallest-market clubs in the league, and two of the clubs that most exemplify a certain way of winning in smaller markets. I’m actually pretty agnostic about “what it means for the sport” or “whether it’s good for baseball” or “how it impacts the lockout.” I don’t think any of that actually matters all that much, because the path was going to stay the path regardless. Instead, I am most interested in the continued dive into exactly how the Brewers and Rays do what they do over LONG periods of time, and how smart organizations can borrow – and then add to – various approaches and ideas. (And also poach talent, of course.) Speaking of poaching talent, the Cubs are adding a new pitching mind to the org (and it’s another guy with a connection to Tread Athletics):New Threads! Honored to share that I will be joining the Chicago Cubs as a Pitching Analytics Coordinator. Couldn’t be more thrilled to join this great group! The last 3 years have been a joy and honor to be with the Phils. Immensely grateful for everyone in Philly! #FlyTheW t.co/Id0MoLS6GI
— Rylan Domingues (@RylanDomingues) October 22, 2026 Most of the pitching-related posting buzz this offseason has been and will be about Kaima Taira given his dominance this past season in the NPB, but Hiromi Itoh will get plenty of attention, too, if he’s ultimately posted. The 29-year-old righty has been outstanding in the NPB for years now (including an equivalent Cy Young season in 2025), though his command/control success will necessarily lead to questions about the transition to MLB. We’ll get into him more if/when he’s posted. That said, a prominent NPB account was talking up three pitchers who could come over from Japan this offseason, and I had zero idea that the third was getting that level of attention: Taira, Itoh, and … Anderson Espinoza?! Old friend Anderson Espinoza?!?! After working his way back from multiple injuries and surgeries (that prevented him from throwing in games for FOUR YEARS), you may recall that the Cubs had an early chance to reclaim Espinoza back in 2021. He did manage to work his way back up through the minors and made his big league debut for the Cubs in 2022 at age 24. It didn’t quite work out, he went back to the Padres to pitch at Triple-A for 2023, struggled, and then headed off to Japan. But, like a lot of talented pitchers who can’t get over that Triple-A/MLB hump, Espinoza broke out in Japan. He dominated the last three years – numbers right up there with Taira and Itoh – and now he can come back to MLB at age 28/29 if teams think he can stay healthy and contribute. He wouldn’t be the first guy to really figure something out in in the NPB or KBO, so it’ll be fascinating to follow what he decides to do. This is indeed a good point that I hadn’t thought about too much:A pretty great point that really isn’t being discussed anywhere. Players amortize their value over their decline phase with long deals. But as Joey Votto says below, in a system with capped term length the stars should be getting $80-100 M a year, but never would.
— Joshua (@JoshuaHowsam) October 23, 2026 In a capped system, teams will be strongly incentivized NOT to give super long deals to superstars (might even be limited by the rules) because those future years of dead weight could absolutely kill you; teams will arguably instead want to give much shorter, much higher annual deals. HOWEVER, those deals are not going to reach the actual level of annual value that the player provides the team in his peak years, precisely because the cap will (realistically) preclude it. So we may see superstar salaries “go up” in their peak years, but their total take may go way down, both because they aren’t hitting their actual value and because contract lengths get chopped. This is kinda like Anthony Rizzo coming back to manage the Cubs:BREAKING: Yomiuri Giants legend Hideki Matsui, who was known for his slugging prowess in Japan before embarking on a successful career in MLB, will manage the NPB franchise next season. t.co/xVKSNayxoL

— Yakyu Cosmopolitan (@yakyucosmo) October 23, 2026 I wonder if the Yomiuri Giants will use the goodwill and the legend of Hideki Matsui to try to get Shoki Oda to sign instead of coming to the States.
