Back in Black, 1K for Cole, Suzuki Out, Mangiapane Mending, and Other Blackhawks Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

It is finally game day for the Blackhawks after what’s felt like another offseason. And, usually, we start out bullets with something that’s specific to the Blackhawks themselves. But we got some news on Friday morning that directly impacts tonight’s game. Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki, the reigning Selke Trophy winner and one of the best all-around forwards in the game, is going to be out for 2-4 weeks because of an upper-body injury.

The Habs are already without Ivan Demidov, who is on IR. On Friday, the Canadiens also recalled forward Owen Beck. While I will never celebrate any player being injured, it certainly feels like the Blackhawks are getting a little bit of a break tonight for Montreal’s one trip to the United Center. Here’s hoping they take advantage.

— Canadiens Montréal (@CanadiensMTL) October 22, 2026 Bowen Byram was still absent from practice on Thursday. He seems unlikely for tonight’s game, and I would say he’s questionable (at best) for Sunday. He hasn’t skated on his own (that I’ve seen) this week, but head coach Jeff Blashill said he’s improving.

Chicago head coach Jeff Blashill said Bowen Byram is still day to day with an upper-body injury but "he's trending the right direction for sure." #Blackhawks

— Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) October 22, 2026 Sticking with the health trend, Andrew Mangiapane was back on the ice in a normal color jersey, which means he’s cleared for contact. After practice, Blashill said Mangiapane should be medically cleared Friday but will probably be a healthy scratch against the Canadiens. We’ll see if/when he draws back into the lineup. It’s been a couple weeks, so I wouldn’t be against a conditioning stint in Rockford if that’s possible.

Andrew Mangiapane is no longer in a non-contact jersey. He hasn’t played since the season opener because of a lower-body injury. #Blackhawks pic.twitter.com/GimoSisRYD

— Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) October 22, 2026 A good read here from Ben Pope on Blackhawks defenseman Ian Cole, who will appear in his 1,000th career regular-season game tonight.

Ian Cole will play his 1,000th NHL game tomorrow. But he's spent most of this week instead focusing on and studying the Blackhawks' D-zone breakout problems and how to fix them."These are things we need to train our brain to solve quickly."New story: t.co/3okgWyz5R7

— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) October 22, 2026 Really fun read here from Scott Powers at The Athletic, who introduces the Blackhawks’ EBUG: Caydon Edwards. He’s at practice every day.

— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) October 22, 2026 You might have noticed we used an image of a Blackhawks skater in the black jerseys for our bullets all week. There’s a reason why.

— Chicago Blackhawks (@NHLBlackhawks) October 22, 2026 On Thursday I chatted with Ryan McGregor on the Blackhawks Conversation about the state of affairs at 1901 W. Madison. Here’s the episode. Steven Ellis shared that the pre-tournament schedule for the 2027 World Junior Championship is now out! And the list of locations for the training camps of the respective countries. The 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship will take place from December 26, 2026, to January 5, 2027, in Edmonton and Red Deer.

— Steven Ellis (@SEllisHockey) October 22, 2026 A couple notes out of St. Louis on Thursday. The Blues placed Zach Dean on waivers; they hope he clears and can report to the AHL. They also converted defenseman Torey Krug to Season Ending LTIR, allowing them to exceed the cap by his full $6.5M cap hit. As a reminder: there are two LTIRs now. One allows a player to come back at some point during the season/playoffs, but affords teams a max cap recapture of $3.9M. Season Ending LTIR means the player is done done — no playoffs or regular season — and a team can then use the player’s entire cap space for a replacement. Pierre LeBrun reported Thursday that teams are calling Columbus about forward Dmitri Voronkov, whose contract expires at the end of the season; he’ll be a restricted free agent after having a $4.175M cap hit this season. Voronkov, 26, can be an unrestricted free agent in 2028. He’s big (6-5, 230) but not a particularly fast skater. Voronkov has scored 58 goals in 217 career regular-season games, 17 of which came in 63 contests last year. LeBrun also reported Hockey Canada will meet with candidates to fill the GM spot for the World Cup of Hockey (which takes place in 2028) at/around the GM meetings in Toronto on Nov. 10. Doug Armstrong stepped down in March. Sad news on Thursday: Ron Duguay passed away. He was a helluva player. Finally (before our prospect schedule for tonight), we got an update on the Ben Kindel situation with the Penguins. Incredibly scary. He’s a wonderful young player and, from everything I’ve heard and experienced, a terrific young man. Hoping for the absolute best for him moving forward.

#LetsGoPens GM and POHO Kyle Dubas said forward Ben Kindel had a vasovagal episode on the team plane. He was given oxygen on the flight and regained consciousness after being attended to by the medical staff.Kindel travelled back to Pittsburgh by plane Wednesday.
