Several beloved Chicago eateries and even a hospital cafeteria have had their doors shut and license suspended in recent months after inspections by city officials led to discoveries cockroach infestations and other serious health violations.

Neon signs reading “LICENSE SUSPENDED” were posted on the doors to Stella’s Diner, a long-standing spot in Lakeview, and Magnolia Bakery, a New York-based bakery known in part from an appearance in the iconic franchise “Sex and the City,” in early July after repeated failed inspections, and earlier this week a cockroach infestation and black slime forced a temporary closure of the cafeteria at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center.

So, if you’re not looking for extra protein in your meal from a few creepy crawlers, how can you check if your favorite spot to eat is keeping its kitchen up to par?

In Chicago, health inspection reports are public record and easily accessible online.

The city’s data portal has a list of food inspection records that is updated weekly and lists the name of the restaurant, its address, inspection date, the risk level determined and whether the restaurant passed the inspection.

Any violations found are also listed, and in the description of the violations it is also listed whether the restaurant was issued citations during the inspection.

If you’re looking for results on a specific restaurant, you can search by name by hovering over the column heading “DBA Name,” clicking the symbol that looks like three lines in the shape of a triangle, and then typing in the name of the restaurant you want to see results for.

The city does clarify on its website that the “violations noted during the inspection are merely allegations and may be disputed and dismissed at the Department of Administrative Hearings. The results posted on-line only reflect the findings at the time of the inspection. They are not intended to provide a historical picture of the food establishment nor are they intended to predict future findings.”
