A woman identified as Jane Doe spoke with NBC News about her alleged assault at a fraternity near the University of Chicago campus ahead of a public safety meeting at the school.
The meeting, set for Wednesday evening, was planned about a month before the allegations came to light.
Jane Doe said she was assaulted earlier this year at the Alpha Delta Phi house near the Hyde Park campus, and she and her attorneys filed a lawsuit on Monday against the national organization and local chapter of Alpha Delta Phi.
In the lawsuit, she said her attack is “the latest in a string of sexual assault reports at the house” that “stretches back more than 15 years.”
Doe’s allegations came days after a woman reported she was sexually assaulted at a party thrown by a different fraternity near the University of Chicago campus and weeks after national outrage was sparked when a former Cornell University student claimed in a lawsuit that she was gang-raped at a fraternity party.
“The grief that this has imposed upon me is indescribable,” she told NBC News. “It is the first thing I think about whenever I wake up every day and the last thing I think about whenever I fall asleep.”
The 19-year-old is not a student at the university. In the lawsuit, she stated she went to a party at the frat house on February 7. She was dancing with friends when a fraternity brother approached her and offered her a shot.
She said it immediately made her feel unsteady and lightheaded.
“I know myself, and that was not the amount with how intoxicated I felt after the shot that I took with him,” she told NBC News. “I’ve never felt like that before.”
She said in the lawsuit she was then led into a bedroom.
“I remember backing onto the bed because I knew what was about to happen, but I just — I didn’t feel like I was strong enough to get out,” she said.
The fraternity said the member involved was suspended and that the conduct described is deeply troubling and inconsistent with their values.
“There has to be a consistent focus on training individuals when they come to certain organizations about the dangers of sexual assault,” said Ephraim Lee, Chicago’s Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability Chair for the 2nd District Council.
The 2nd District Council includes Hyde Park. He and his members will join university police for a quarterly public safety meeting. He knows the recent allegations will be a topic of discussion among students and the public.
“They don’t want empty words, they don’t want empty promises, they want action, they want to see the university take action and I’m 100% for that,” he said. “If that’s what they need to do — they do it.”
