Inside the Odd Fellows Temple at 1101 Market St. in San Francisco, black-and-white murals show a skeleton leaving a coffin, a beehive, a serpent, and an all-seeing eye, the San Francisco Standard reported. The six-story building also houses a museum with antique blindfolds and a 1924 event program that holds a diamond-studded California gold nugget.

The Odd Fellows sold the building for $6.75 million in 2025, the Standard said. The buyer was an LLC registered to Dr. Reza Malek, a neurosurgeon and investor, and the order is moving its San Francisco headquarters to the Excelsior district.

It was the first sale in 145 years, as the Odd Fellows have owned the corner of Market and Seventh streets since 1880, according to The Real Deal. The current building was completed in 1909 to replace an earlier one that was demolished to slow fires after the 1906 earthquake, per Connect CRE.

The Beaux-Arts building has rounded arches and terra cotta and copper decoration, the Standard said. A vertical “Odd Fellows Temple” sign with the order’s chain-link logo will stay in place.

Today, the temple is home to artists and studios, including artist Richard Perri, ballet and salsa studios, and a podcast studio in the basement, the Standard reported. The building was put on the market in 2023, before it was finally sold two years later.

The new owner plans to keep the arts and nonprofit tenants. “The buyer’s dedication to supporting the arts and nonprofit organizations reflects our shared belief in a bright future for the next chapter of 1101 Market Street,” said broker Pete Mikacich of Colliers, who represented both sides.

San Francisco is not the only city where an old landmark has been given a second act. In 2018, Ford paid $90 million for Detroit’s Michigan Central Station, and restoring it and building its campus cost nearly $950 million.
