Some special education CPS students being taught in hallways, parents claim ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Special education students at a Chicago school are being taught in offices, hallways, storage rooms, stairwells and in classrooms with asbestos, some parents say.

The parents say students are facing the questionable conditions at Prescott Elementary School, located in the city’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. They say their concerns are being ignored, and they’re deciding to take a stand.

“I am frustrated, disappointed and looking for some action for issues we have encountered now for four months,” said parent Ana Ribeiro. “When the burden falls only on kids with disabilities, this is not a space issue, it is a discrimination issue. I am advocating for my child, but all the children as well.”

Ribeiro said in June of this year parents learned special education students would be losing some of their spaces in the basement to make way for a music room and a dance room.

Ribeiro said last week, after reviewing of all CPS’s asbestos reports, she came to the conclusion that there has been no work done on the crumbling walls, plaster walls, and tiles in the school’s basement.

“I have hired an attorney to ensure my son will have all the services he needs in an appropriate space,” she said. “I would love for my child to continue at school. We love our school community, but the teachers are also suffering having to do instruction in these spaces.”

The Illinois Department of Public Health in a statement told us it has an open investigation regarding asbestos at Prescott School in Chicago, but that due to the ongoing investigation, additional information is not available.

CPS in a statement defended its policies.

“Chicago Public Schools (CPS) leaders and staff are dedicated to ensuring that students with disabilities receive the services outlined in their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).

“The District adheres to the policies established by the Board of Education, as well as city and state regulations, to ensure that all instructional spaces provide safe environments for delivering services. CPS acknowledges the concerns expressed by some parents and community members of Prescott Elementary School regarding the availability of space for special education services and takes these concerns seriously. However, all instructional areas at Prescott Elementary are safe, and while some classrooms have been relocated, no students have been displaced.

“The District is committed to ensuring that every student, including those with disabilities, has access to safe and appropriate learning environments where all services specified in their IEPs can be provided as required.”
