Academy-Award Winning actress Julie Andrews, 91, has dazzled audiences on the stage and screen for nearly 80 years.
The Daily Mail reported that Andrews was paparazzied in the Hamptons, the area she resides in, close to her 63-year-old daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton.
The photos showed the retired actress sitting in a car, wearing a lavender raincoat, sunglasses, and a white baseball hat, which covered her signature short hair.
Julie Andrews Shared Insight Into the Start of Her Career
Andrews starred in beloved and acclaimed films like The Sound of Music (1965), Mary Poppins (1964), and The Princess Diaries (2001).
In a 2022 interview with Vanity Fair, Andrews explained that her “career began at quite a young age.” She noted that her “school closed because of the war, World War II, and [her] mother and [her] stepfather for some crazy reason decided to give [her] some singing lessons.”
Andrews then explained that her mother, Barbara Ward Morris, and stepfather, Ted Andrews, were in the vaudeville business.
“My stepdad was in vaudeville, and my mother was a pianist. And she played the piano for him, and they had an act, toured all over England,” said Andrews in the 2022 interview.
She said that once her mother and stepfather discovered she “had a kind of freaky adult larynx and could sing all kinds of coloratura songs,” she was invited to be “part of their act” around the age of 10. She said that the press took interest in her when she was 13 because it was unusual for a child to have “such a freaky four octave voice.”
Andrews noted that she soon starred “in a London production of Cinderella.” She explained that “some American producers came over to London” to see “a very popular show called The Boyfriend.” According to Andrews, her friend implored the producers to watch her performance in Cinderella.
“So they came to see the show, came backstage and met, and asked if I’d like to go to Broadway in America, which was one of the great pieces of serendipity in my life,” said Andrews while speaking to Vanity Fair.
She was then asked to star as Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady.
“And then I guess my career took off from there,” concluded Andrews.
