DuPage County announced a case of measles in a vaccinated resident, marking the county’s first measles case for 2026 amid growing national concern for the highly contagious disease.

The DuPage County Health Department announced the case Wednesday, saying the resident, who was vaccinated against the diseased, had recently returned from international travel and passed through terminal 5 at O’Hare International Airport.

DCHD described the case as a “rare breakthrough infection.”

“While measles after vaccination is uncommon, it can occur when there is intense or prolonged exposure to a person with measles,” the health department said.

The health department went on to say that those those who have been vaccinated against the virus but still develop measles typically have a midler case, are less likely to experience complications and are less likely to spread the disease to others.

“Our community’s safety is our priority. Our team is actively working on following up with individuals who may have been potentially exposed,” DuPage County Health Department executive director Adam Forker said in the announcement. “Vaccination continues to provide strong protection, even in a rare breakthrough case.”

Most people in DuPage County have been vaccinated against measles, the announcement said, but DCHD is working to contact anyone who may have been exposed. Overall, the risk to the public is low, the announcement said.

The health department asked any DuPage County residents who may have been at O’Hare’s Terminal 5 on Oct. 15 between 4:20 and 7 p.m. to contact the health department at 630-682-7400. Those who may have passed through the airport during that date and time but live in another county are asked to contact their local health department.

Anyone who has received two doses of the MMR vaccine, or were born before 1957, are considered protected, the health department said. Those who are unsure of their vaccination status should contact their doctor.

Health officials advised anyone — vaccinated or not — who may have been expo

sed to monitor for measles symptoms, including fever, rash, cough, runny rose or red, watery eyes.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, Illinois has recorded 24 cases of measles so far in 2026. Of those, 79% of cases were in people who were unvaccinated, or people who’s vaccination status was not known.
