AC/DC’s Back in Black has some new competition in the all-time album rankings.
Nirvana’s Nevermind, the 1991 record that helped bring grunge to the mainstream, has overtaken the rock classic to claim the No. 6 spot on ChartMasters’ list of the best-selling albums of all time.
Released on September 24, 1991, Nevermind helped turn Nirvana into one of the defining bands of the decade. The album featured some of the group’s most recognizable songs, including “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come as You Are,” “Lithium” and “In Bloom.” Its lasting impact has also earned it recognition from the Grammy Hall of Fame.
More than three decades later, the record continues to find new audiences and add to its commercial legacy. On Tuesday, October 20, LouderSound reported that Nevermind had moved ahead of AC/DC’s 1980 album in ChartMasters’ latest ranking.
ChartMasters calculates its all-time rankings using a combination of physical album sales, digital sales, singles and streaming figures, among other metrics. This approach accounts for more than traditional album purchases when measuring a record’s overall commercial performance.
According to the figures, AC/DC’s Back in Black still leads Nevermind in physical album sales and digital single sales.
However, Nirvana’s album holds a substantial advantage across the other categories included in the calculation, giving it the edge in the overall ranking.
As a result, Nevermind now sits one place above Back in Black, which ranks No. 7 on the list.
