RIT surveillance charge: 19-year-old student accused of placing recording device in Henrietta residence hall bathroom ...Middle East

HENRIETTA, N.Y. — A 19-year-old RIT student has been charged with unlawful surveillance after deputies said he put a recording device in a residence hall bathroom.

Monroe County sheriff’s deputies said Avery Bird, from Gloucester, Massachusetts, set up the device in an unnamed residence hall bathroom on Sept. 16. The device was discovered by RIT’s Public Safety Department on Sept. 18, who then notified the sheriff’s office. After about a month of investigating, deputies arrested Bird on Oct. 20.

News10NBC spoke with students on the RIT campus to learn how the news is impacting them.

“Real disturbing. Real creeped out,” said freshman Gem Pascucci.

“These kinds of things are happening like in a lot of campuses. And I need I think it needs to be taken more seriously,” said fellow freshman Avia Maimon.

Freshman Jazmin Vazquez was critical of the school’s response to the investigation.

“I understand, like, maybe they don’t want to leak the information of students that could have possibly had any images taken of them or anything like that. But I feel like they could at least let us know what building it was, just so that we were aware of the situation. Because nobody wants to hear of like, ‘oh, like the bathrooms have been compromised.’ We don’t know where, but they have,” Vazquez said.

In a statement to students obtained by News10NBC, RIT said Bird has been “removed from the RIT community.” We reached out to RIT to clarify what that means, but did not receive a response. Some students said just knowing this happened has put them on edge, but are glad to see quick action taken by the school.

“Kind of disturbing, honestly. I mean, not surprised, but also kind of, like, a little bothered. Kind of makes me not want to use the bathroom,” said Isabella Peraz, a grad student at the school.

“RIT should be strict on, like, sexual crimes and stuff like that,” said senior Johnathan Lee.

“I think that it was good that they got to the point quickly, and hopefully they will actually have a severe punishment, something that actually fits the crime. And instead of like an essay or something like that,” said freshman Ryan Harris Haughton.

RIT said it did a broad search of the campus and no other recording devices have been found.
