Bob Dylan has given a beloved 1975 song a dramatic makeover, and Rolling Stone is calling the result “absolutely stunning.” The music legend recently performed “Tangled Up in Blue” live for the first time in eight years, unveiling a piano-led ballad with two rewritten verses that bring new perspective to one of his most enduring songs.
Bob Dylan Rewrites “Tangled Up in Blue” With Two New Verses on His 2026 Tour
View this post on InstagramDylan brought “Tangled Up in Blue” back to the stage on October 17, 2026, at the opening of his Lights of Autumn European tour in Oslo, Norway. It was the first time he had performed the song live since 2018.
Instead of the guitar-driven version fans have come to expect, Dylan delivered a slower, piano-led performance that gave the song a more intimate feel. He also introduced two substantially rewritten verses, adding new reflections on missed opportunities and how time changes our perspective.
Rolling Stone praised the arrangement’s emotional impact, calling it “absolutely stunning.” Rather than simply revisiting a classic for old times’ sake, Dylan is finding new ways to interpret a song he first released more than 50 years ago.
Its fragmented storytelling has always left room for interpretation, capturing the way memories of a relationship can blur and change over time. The new verses offer another perspective on a song that continues to evolve alongside its songwriter.

Bob Dylan Wrote “Tangled Up in Blue” After Listening to Joni Mitchell’s Blue
“Tangled Up in Blue” also has a surprising connection to Joni Mitchell. Writer Ron Rosenbaum reported that Dylan told him he wrote the song after spending a weekend listening to Mitchell’s Blue, her acclaimed 1971 album.
On Blue, Mitchell explores love, loneliness, vulnerability and emotional upheaval. Those themes also run through Dylan’s song, though his fragmented storytelling leaves listeners to piece together its scattered memories and draw their own conclusions about the relationship at its center.
The Relevance of “Tangled Up in Blue”
Part of what makes “Tangled Up in Blue” endure is its refusal to offer a neat resolution. Relationships rarely unfold in a straight line, and memories can look different as the years pass. Dylan’s new verses bring that idea into sharper focus, suggesting that the stories we tell ourselves about our past can change along with us.
At 85, Dylan is revisiting material he first released decades ago, bringing a lifetime of experience to themes of love, separation and uncertainty. The song remains recognizable, but the new arrangement gives it a different emotional weight.
Rather than merely recreating a classic, Dylan has found a way to make it feel alive again. It’s a reminder that even a song listeners know by heart can still hold a surprise.
