The No. 8 Alabama Crimson Tide soccer team hosted the No. 2 Vanderbilt Commodores for a top-10 matchup Sunday. Alabama lost 2-1.

“We ran into a good team today. I thought we played well,” said head coach Wes Hart. “I was not disappointed. I thought our effort was fantastic.”

The game felt like a top-10 matchup with the ball being end-to-end the whole game, several fouls and tons of pressure from both teams.

That pressure was broken by the Crimson Tide in the 19th minute when forward Kiley Kukan was sent a long ball by midfielder Melina Remimbas and broke through Vanderbilt’s back line. This left Kukan at a 1-on-1 with Vanderbilt goalkeeper Alexa Gianoplus, Kukan sent the ball slightly to Gianoplus’ right to put the ball in the back of the net.

“It was exciting to score and get on the board,” Kukan said. “There’s so much left of the season. I’m excited.”

In the 26th minute there was a VAR review to see if Alabama would be awarded a penalty. Defender Kennedy Garcia had fallen in the box, but ultimately was not rewarded a penalty kick.

Forward Presley Williams received a yellow card in the 38th minute for a bad slide tackle.

In the 43rd minute, defender Ulla Sharp received a yellow card for a push in the back.

In the 45th minute, a VAR review happened to see if Vanderbilt would be awarded a penalty. After the review, the penalty kick was awarded to the Commodores  with a foul on midfielder Trinity Daudu Ihayere for a high kick.

Vanderbilt midfielder Courtney Jones stepped up to the penalty spot and sent the ball into the back of the net to level the score right before the half.

The second half started with the ball being end-to-end between both teams and several fouls on either side of the ball. Then, in the 65th minute, Vanderbilt forward Megan Hinnenkamp scored a goal off of her right boot.

“We did really well as a defensive whole, but it’s unfortunate the results,” goalkeeper Madi Munguia said.

Another VAR review was conducted in the 79th minute to see if there was a Vanderbilt handball in the box after Hart challenged the initial call of no handball. After the review, there was no handball resulting in a cornerkick for Alabama.

The game ended about 11 minutes after that, with Vanderbilt taking the win 2-1.

“All the way until that final whistle, we were pressing them. There was no giving up, there was no quitting. I think we just ran out of time. I won’t take anything away from them,” Hart said.

Alabama will be back in action Friday at home against Tennessee. The game is set to start at 7 p.m. CT.
